Hopefully you had a great Memorial Day weekend. It was an exciting weekend with storms moving thru, nice days then more storms and wind. A little shout out here to Wayne Lawn and Landscape which is celebrating 35 years this year. It is amazing to think that the business has continued for that long. When it was started, I definitely didn’t know that it would last that long. It has lasted that long thanks to the great employees we have had over the years. Especially due to Tom Norman, Nate Conaway, Rhett Momchilov and Becky Boss who make up the management and professional staff. It has been a great career due to the employees, our customers and vendors and some of the landscape projects we have had.  Of course, it has been a little like this past weekend too with great days and a few storms along the way. Luckily, we have endured the few storms and gotten by.
For the past month, it has been a little warm with about normal precipitation. For the period April 28 thru May 27 the average temperature was 65.4 degrees. Normal for this period is 57.5 degrees. On May 20 the high temperature was 87.4 degrees. For the period, precipitation was 3.7 inches while normal is 3.8 inches. Along with the mild winter and the warm last 2 months, the plants have bloomed and grown like crazy. We have been pruning like it was June.
Gardening tip of the month: Get your plants planted before June 8 or after September 1. Perennials, shrubs and trees do best if planted in the spring or in early fall. Planting in the summer makes it hard for the plants to take root and thrive. Summers are hot with long days and dry conditions. Consequently, plants need to be watered much more in the summer. On a limited scale, commercially, we sometimes plant in the summer. But, then they need to be watered. Â It is much better to plant in the spring or fall.
